A man died after a gun holstered at his waist accidentally went off while he was getting up from a sofa in Dhani Sucha Singh village on Monday, media reports said.

The victim, identified as Harpinder Singh alias Sonu, was an NRI who had recently returned to India.

According to police, Harpinder was sitting on a sofa with a relative when the incident occurred. As he stood up, the pistol discharged, and the bullet struck his abdomen.

The incident was reportedly captured on the house’s CCTV cameras.

Footage shows family members rushing to Harpinder’s aid immediately after the gunshot and attempting to assist him out of the room. He was initially taken to a government hospital, from where he was referred to another facility in Bathinda.

He succumbed to his injuries while en route.

Harpinder’s body has been sent for postmortem examination. Station House Officer Ravinder Sharma of Sadar Police Station recorded the statement of Harpinder’s father, Darshan Singh, and took action under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), subsequently handing over the body to the family.

Harpinder, who had recently married and returned from abroad, is survived by his two-year-old daughter.

His funeral was held on Tuesday, attended by villagers and members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) paying their respects.
