'Not just allies': Marco Rubio’s big claim on India-US relations in Delhi

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that the United States and India are not just allies but strategic partners working together across multiple regions of the world.

He made the remarks during delegation-level talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi on Sunday, during his four-day visit to India.

'Strategic Allies, Not Just Regional Partners'

Rubio emphasized that the relationship between the two countries goes beyond traditional alliances and is defined by long-term strategic cooperation.

“The US and India aren’t just allies. We are strategic allies and that’s of critical importance,” Rubio said, highlighting that the partnership extends across global regions, including potential cooperation in the Western Hemisphere.

He added that while the US works with many countries globally, its relationship with India stands out due to its depth and strategic scope.

Shared Democratic Values

Calling India and the US the world’s two largest democracies, Rubio said this shared foundation enables broad cooperation across sectors.

“We are the two largest democracies in the world. That alone is a baseline for incredible cooperation,” he said, noting that both nations share extensive common interests.

Focus on Building Existing Partnership

Rubio stressed that the relationship is not about rebuilding ties but strengthening an already strong foundation.

“This is not about restoring or reinvigorating… it is about continuing to build on what is already a very solid and strong strategic partnership,” he said.

High-Level Meetings in New Delhi

Rubio also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit. According to officials, the discussions covered sustained progress in bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors.

Following the meeting, Modi said India and the US would continue working closely for global stability and the broader international good.
