Noida's sector 50 metro station named Rainbow Station in honour of transgender community
Noida/IBNS: Noida Metro Rail Cooperation (NMRC) on Wednesday changed the name of sector-50 metro station to Rainbow station with the aim to empower the transgender community and trigger a change in the way it is perceived by other sections of the society, media reports said.
“NMRC had received a number of suggestions from individuals and NGOs regarding a suitable name for the station which would correctly signify and represent the essence of this community. Keeping these suggestions in mind, NMRC has decided to name the station as ‘Rainbow’ station,” an official NMRC release signed by its managing director Ritu Maheshwari said, reported the media.
Noida Sec 50 station is on the Aqua Line and it connects Noida with Greater Noida, the twin cities.
Maheshwari had said the dedication did not mean that the station would be reserved for the transgender community and it is an attempt to connect them with the mainstream, the reports added.
The official release stated that the initiative has been taken up with very noble intentions with the aim to empower the transgender community, the official release issued today said.
NMRC has also proposed to offer employment opportunities to the transnsgender community to help them become self-reliant to pave their way for their healthy inclusion and participation in society.
Sec 50 station would be upgraded with toilets and other facilities to reflect its special status, said an HT report. The process of upgrading the station would be completed in a month's time, added the report.
Earlier, NMRC had named two of its other stations as pink stations to honour the women.
