Nobel laureate Amartya Sen expresses grief over Nabaneeta Dev Sen's death

Kolkata/UNI: Nobel laureate Amartya Sen today expressed sadness at the passing away of his former wife Nabaneeta Dev Sen at her south Kolkata residence on Thursday evening.

Award-winning poet, writer and teacher Nabaneeta Dev Sen passed away on Thursday after a prolonged illness.

She was 81 and is survived by her two daughters Antara and Nandana. The duo bade adieu by singing when their poetess mom breathed her last on their lap.

Economist Amartya Sen reacting to the demise of his former wife, said he was very sad as he spent several years with her.

Amartya Sen was married to Nabaneeta in 1959 before they got separated in 1976.

He said their two daughters - Antara and Nandana - had been bridging between them before his former spouse died.

West Bengal governor Jagdeep Dhankar visited the house " Bhalo Bhasa" at Ballygunj this morning and paid floral tribute to the departed soul.

Writers, poets, academicians, social activists and people from all walks of life thronged to pay tributes at Academy Fine of Arts where her body was laid for for public viewing. A Sahitya Akademi and Padma Shri awardee Ms. Deb Sen will be best remembered for her feminist take on the Ramayana, which she has analysed from Sita's perspective. Her book, Sitayan,was translated into many languages.

Her parents, both poets, were associated with Rabindranath Tagore and Ms. Deb Sen often said she knew that “one of the signatures ofgrowing up is to write poetry”.

Her first collection of poems came out in 1959, the year she was married to economist Amartya Sen. .

Nabaneeta Dev Sen to be cremated at the Keoratalla buring ghat later today.
