No person can be forced to get vaccinated against COVID-19: Centre tells Supreme Court
New Delhi/IBNS: The central government on Monday told the Supreme Court that it can advise but not force individuals to get vaccinated against coronavirus pandemic, media reports said.
The government said this on the issue of exempting people with disabilities from producing COVID-19 vaccination certificates.
In response to a plea filed by an NGO seeking door-to-door and priority vaccination, the Centre said as quoted by NDTV, "It is submitted that the direction and guidelines released by Government of India and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare do not envisage any forcible vaccination without obtaining consent of the concerned individual."
The Union Health Ministry said, "It is duly advised, advertised and communicated through various print and social media platforms that all citizens should get vaccinated and systems and processes have been designed to facilitate the same."
"However, no person can be forced to be vaccinated against their wishes," it added.
So far under the national vaccination drive, 157.20 crore vaccine doses have been administered across the country of 130 crore people.
