NIT row: Rahul vows to put pressure on government
Tweeting pictures of his interaction, Gandhi's official Twitter handle read, "Met students & parents from NIT Srinagar who expressed concern over the safety & security of students on campus."
"I assured them that the Congress Party would raise their concerns & put pressure on the Govt to resolve the matter," a second tweet read.
News of unrest first did the rounds on April 1, following India's defeat to West Indies in the recently concluded World T20.
It was reported that a group of non-local students went berserk with the celebrations while chanting anti-national slogans.
"The ‘jubilant’ students celebrated the West Indies cricket team win for hours," an official had told IBNS.
Another senior official was quoted as saying, "Non-local students reportedly damaged college infrastructure and clashed with the local students. The clashes affected class work while authorities called police to diffuse the situation."
In subsequent days, huge protests were raised, following which reports of torture against the non-local students surfaced.
