Nipah virus infected Kerala student: Minister

Kochi, Jun 4 (UNI): A student studied in an Institute near Thodupuzha and undergoing treatment at a private hospital here has been tested positive for the deadly Nipah Virus, Kerala Health Minister K K Shailaja on Tuesday confirmed on Tuesday.

Addressing a press conference here, the Minister said the lab reports from National Institute of Virology in Pune confirmed the presence of virus.

Four more people, including two nurses who were in contact with the patient, have the symptoms of Nipah are under constant observation. However, one among them was shifted to an isolation ward, the Minister added.

Informing the people not to be panic, the Minister said the Health Department took all precautionary measures to stop the spread of the virus.

Stressing that the priority is to prevent the spread of disease, she said as many as 86 people are under observation in the State.

The 23-year-old patient hailed from Paravur and had attended a camp in Thrissur district.

The student is being treated at Aster Medcity in Kochi, Ms Shailaja said.
