Netaji death anniversary: Jaitley tweet piques Bose family, Mamata

New Delhi/Kolkata, Aug 18 (IBNS): In a major gaffe by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, a tweet by him on Netaji's "death anniversary" on Thursday morning misfired, triggering angry reactions from Bose's family members as well as West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

On what has been the biggest mystery in post independent India, many believe that Subhas Chandra Bose, commonly referred to as Netaji, survived the fatal plane crash, while some form the opinion that the accident marked his end.

Jaitley's tweet acknowledging the death anniversary of the freedom fighter was seen as a sign of acceptance from the present government about his mysterious death.

Jaitley tweeted, "Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was an icon of exemplary valour and sacrifice. We remember & pay him our respectful tribute on his death anniversary."

The tweet was met with protests from netizens and has been deleted since.

Protesting against Jaitley's actions, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee tweeted, "Today is Raksha Bandhan I don't want to hurt anybody. But shocked with @arunjaitley Ji hurtful tweet this morning on Netaji. We're all hurt."

Chandra Bose, Netaji's grand-nephew, who joined the BJP prior to the Bengal elections earlier this year, also demanded Jaitley's apology, reports said.

The West Bengal government recently declassified some files on Netaji, following which the central government too declassified some files on him.
