Guwahati, Dec 11 (IBNS)  : The Congress on Tuesday lost Mizoram, its last citadel in the Northeast as the National Democratic ally Mizo National Front march ahead to oust the Lal Thanhawla-led Government securing a heavy mandate from the people.

Counting of votes for the 40-member Mizoram Assembly elections is still underway, but the MNF is all set to form the new government, already winning 25 seats and leading in another.

Five-time Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla has lost both Champhai South and Serchhip from where he contested.

Lal Thanhawla lost the Champhai South seat to MNF candidate TJ Lalnuntulanga by 1049 votes and Serchhip seat to ZPM’s Lalduhoma by 410 votes.

The Congress has won only five seats so far.

On the other hand, the BJP  opened its account in Mizoram after its candidate Buddha Dhan Chakma won the Tuichawng seat.

After the 2014 general election, BJP has wrested power in all the  Congress- ruled states in the north eastern region.

After forming government in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Tripura, Nagaland, the saffron party has planned to set up its organisational base in Mizoram.

This time, the BJP fielded  39 candidates.
