Naveen Patnaik meets President Kovind over minimum support price for rice

New Delhi, Jan 8 (IBNS): Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik met President Ram Nath Kovind here on Tuesday to press for raising the minimum support price of rice to Rs 2,930 a quintal from the current Rs 1,750.

"The Bharatiya Janata Party had promised in its manifesto in 2014 (to raise the minimum support price of rice), Naveen told reporters after his meeting with the President.

"However, sadly, they have done nothing about it. We've repeatedly reminded them by letter and by telephone to do something for the farmers are suffering... But yet, they haven't done anything," he said.

The BJD held a public meeting on the issue in the national capital before Naveen and his delegation went to meet President Kovind.

When asked whether the BJD would join the alliance against the BJP before the general elections this year, Naveen said his party would take some time to think over it, reports said.

Telangana chief minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao had met Naveen recently on the issue of forming a non-Congress, non-BJP alliance ahead of the next Lok Sabha elections.
