Kolkata, Jan 15 (IBNS): The National Commission for Women has directed the police to take action against a Jadavpur University professor in West Bengal for his comment on 'virgin girl'.

In his social media post, the professor compared a woman's virginity to a "sealed bottle" or "packet".

Kanak Sarkar is a professor at the university's international relations department.

The Commission tweeted: "@NCWIndia has taken Suo Motu cognisance of objectionable statements made by a #Jadavpur University professor. A team from @NCWindia, led by Smt. @sharmarekha, will meet the University's Vice Chancellor to discuss the matter during their scheduled visit to #WestBengal this week."

"@NCWIndia has also written to DGP, #WestBengal directing him to investigate the matter and take appropriate action as per the relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code," it said.

Several students demonstrated against the professor's remark inside the campus on Tuesday.

Kanak Sarkar had posted: "Virgin girl is like sealed bottle or sealed packet. Are you willing to buy broken seal while purchasing a bottle of cold drinks or a packet of biscuits... To most boys virgin wife is like angel."

Amid protests, the professor later deleted the post.
