New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday wished his immediate predecessor Manmohan Singh on his birthday.

Singh, a Rajya Sabha member and one of the Congress' top leaders, turned 87 on this day.

Modi said in a tweet, "Best wishes to our former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh Ji on his birthday. I pray for his long and healthy life."

Singh remained the country's Prime Minister between 2004 and 2014 until his party was voted out by Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Being an economist, Singh remained the Chief Economic Advisor and Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). He was also the head of the Planning Commission.

The former Prime Minister is also credited for the liberalisation of Indian economy under the PV Narasimha Rao government in 1990s.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also wished Singh and tweeted, "On his birthday, let us acknowledge Dr Manmohan Singh Ji’s selfless service, dedication & incredible contribution to the cause of nation building."
