Nagaland: Visually-impaired student Labina inspires with remarkable academic journey
Dimapur/Nagaland: Labina, a visually-impaired student from Government High School, Lengrijan, has achieved a significant milestone by clearing the HSLC exams with an impressive aggregate of over 60%.
Her journey from darkness to success is a testament to her perseverance and determination, making her an inspiration for others facing similar challenges, reported Mourung Express.
Labina's educational path faced numerous obstacles, beginning with the closure of the school for blind children where she received early education.
Despite being denied the opportunity to appear for her final exams in 8th grade, she remained resilient, determined to try again the following year. However, the COVID-19 pandemic further complicated her pursuit of education, leaving her without a smartphone for virtual classes.
In a moment of despair, Labina's prayers were answered when an NGO extended their support and provided her with a smartphone for her studies.
She cleared her 8th grade with good marks and enrolled in Government High School, Lengrijan. Over time, Labina's indomitable spirit and the acceptance of her classmates helped her overcome her struggles, gradually excelling in her studies.
Labina's achievements were also aided by the invaluable support of Vikili Assumi, a resource teacher for visually impaired students, who has been tutoring her since 2010.
Vikili, who herself is visually impaired, runs a hostel for visually impaired students, providing them with vocational training and promoting inclusivity in society.
Labina's success story highlights the need for greater sensitization and inclusivity towards people with disabilities in Naga society. Vikili emphasizes the importance of educating and guiding parents to foster independence in children with special needs.
As the government takes steps towards inclusivity, individuals' support can make a significant difference in shaping the future of these students.
Labina's journey serves as a reminder that determination and resilience can triumph over any disability. She has now joined Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Dimapur, pursuing her higher secondary education with aspirations of becoming a teacher.
Through her accomplishments, Labina continues to inspire others, while Vikili shares her wisdom and experiences through her YouTube channel, proving that disabilities need not limit one's potential.
