My heart goes out to people who have become refugees in their own country because of NRC: Mamata

Kolkata, Aug 19 (IBNS): Attacking the Centre, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday said her heart goes out to those left out of the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the Indian state of Assam.

She selected to make the comment on a day when the world is observing World Humanitarian Day.

The NRC has excluded close to 40 lakh people.

"Today is World Humanitarian Day. Respecting human rights is one of the basic tenets of our Constitution. On this day, my heart goes out to the 40 lakh people who have become refugees in their own country because of #NRCAssam," Banerjee tweeted.

The complete draft was released on July 30.

Banerjee has been criticising the Centre over the move since then.

In the NRC draft, 2.89 crore people were found to be eligible for inclusion even as 3.29 crore people had applied for it.
