Mumbai rains: 22 people die, IMD issues red alert for metropolis

Mumbai:  At least 22 people were killed and six others injured in two separate incidents of landslide and house collapse in Mumbai following the heavy rains that lashed the city.

As many as 11 incidents of wall house collapse and landslide, 13 short-circuit incidents, tree-falling in nine areas were reported between Saturday night and Sunday morning, the police control room said.

Following the incessant overnight rain in the city, 17 persons were killed and two others were injured after a retaining wall collapsed in New Bharat Nagar in Mahul.

Three others were killed after few huts collapsed in Surya Nagar in Panchsheel Chawl in Vikhroli east.

Another person was killed in a wall collapse incident at Bhandup.

In another landslide at Chandivali, two people were injured. Another person died due to electrocution at the Firdaus Mithai Shop in Andheri west on Sunday morning.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the loss of lives due to wall collapses in Chembur and Vikhroli in Mumbai.

PM Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh to be given to the next of kin of those who lost their lives and Rs. 50,000 to those injured.

In a series of PMO tweets, the Prime Minister said, "Saddened by the loss of lives due to wall collapses in Chembur and Vikhroli in Mumbai. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. Praying that those who are injured have a speedy recovery."

Announcing the compsensation, another tweet read: "Rs. 2 lakh each from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of those who lost their lives due to wall collapses in Mumbai. Rs. 50,000 would be given to those injured."

Meanwhile, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray condoled the loss of lives in the incident.

"CM Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray has expressed his deepest condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones in the mishap caused due to torrential rains in Chembur & Vikhroli," CMO Maharashtra tweeted.
