Mumbai: Nine arrested for denying flat to Muslim family

Mumbai, Sept 20 (IBNS): Nine members of a housing society in Mumbai's Vasai region were arrested after they disallowed a Muslim family from purchasing an apartment there, reports said.

A complaint was registered against 11 members by Jignesh Patel, the apartment owner, who was barred from selling his property to the Muslim family.

These 11 residents of Happy Jivan, the society in question, said that they cannot live with a family of non-vegetarians.

In his complaint, Patel accused the other members of hurting his religious sentiments, while stating that the same society houses two Muslim families.

"They gave me a letter signed by residents saying that selling the flat to a Muslim will spoil the atmosphere," his complaint read.

Meanwhile, following the legal action by the complainant, the housing society has taken a U-turn and have said that they have no issues with him selling the apartment to a Muslim family.

Patel too has showed interest of withdrawing the case since he now faces no opposition.

The arrested members are out on bail now.
