Mumbai landslide horror: 2 dead, several feared trapped under debris in Kurla
A landslide at a chawl in Mumbai’s Kurla area early Wednesday left at least two people dead, while five others are feared trapped under the debris, media reports said.
Multiple agencies are currently engaged in rescue and evacuation operations at the site.
According to information shared by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) Mumbai Fire Brigade, the incident occurred at around 3:48 am on Wednesday, reported NDTV.
BMC Mayor Ritu Tawde and Additional Municipal Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs) Avinash Dhakne visited the site to assess the situation and oversee the ongoing rescue efforts.
A Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) was quoted by NDTV as saying that emergency response teams and local authorities were continuing rescue operations.
While the exact number of people trapped was yet to be confirmed, the officer said three to four people were suspected to be still trapped under the debris.
The bodies of the deceased have been sent to a hospital for further procedures, the DCP said.
Police are conducting further investigations into the incident, he added.
