Modi meets Iranian President Rouhani

New York, Sep 26 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday met Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on the sidelines of the High-Level segment of United Nations General Assembly session here.

The meeting comes within days of US President Donald Trump making a blistering attack against Iran at the UNGA and also in the presence of Mr Modi on Tuesday.

The meeting is also taking place after Prime Minister Modi met Mr Trump twice in last few days - first at the 'Howdy, Modi' rally on Sunday at Houston and then for a bilateral meeting in New York on Tuesday.

External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar met his Iranian counterpart Javad Zarif on Tuesday in New York but the Indian government did not reveal details of the parleys.

Dr Jaishankar had tweeted: "Good catching up with FM of Iran Javad Zarif on UNGA 74 margins. A very useful exchange of perspectives on regional developments. Agreed to stay in touch".

India has always given emphasis to its ties with Iran. Earlier this month, Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale has led the Indian delegation for Foreign Office Consultations on September 15-16.

Matters concerning fuel and terrorism vis-a-vis Kashmir situation are expected to come up at the talks.
