Modi felicitates families of Odisha freedom fighters, prays at Lingaraj

Bhubaneshwar, Apr 16 (BNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday felicitated the families of 16 freedom fighters of Odisha who fought in Paika rebellion in 1817 against the British rule.

"From the Paika warriors to Quit India, Odisha has a rich history of freedom fighters who fiercely resisted colonialism," Modi tweeted while sharing the details of the programme.

He wrote: "Today I was privileged to join a very special programme in Bhubaneswar- I met relatives of leading freedom fighters of Odisha."

Modi honoured the family members of freedom fighters - Jayee Rajguru, Buxi Jagabandhu, Samant Madhab Chandra Routray, Pindiki Bahubalendra, Krutibas Patsani, Dama Subudhi Mangaraj, Chakra Bisoyee, Rendo Majhi, Veer Surendra Sai, Chakhi Khuntia, Madho Singh, Raghunath Mohanty, Dibakar Parida, Laxman Nayak, Laxmi Indira Panda and Dinabandhu Samantray Mohapatra.

He posted that: "India will never forget these courageous freedom fighters, who lost their lives so that fellow Indians can breathe the air of freedom."

Earlier in the day, Modi visited and prayed at the Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneshwar.

"Prayed at the Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar. The magnificence of the Temple and Temple Complex leaves a lasting impression on the mind," Modi tweeted while sharing pictures of his visit.
