Imphal, Sept 21 (IBNS) : Tension gripped Manipur University after security personnel carried out raids in the central campus midnight last night.

According to the reports, over 200 personnel of Manipur police and other security forces raided the boys' hostel and arresting over 90 students.

Students alleged that the security personnel resorted to lathicharge and fired tear gas shells in which several were injured. Manipur police commandos also allegedly used smoke bombs.

Five  faculty members have also been taken into custody. Inmates of a hostel are also reportedly missing.

The incident took place only few days after normalcy returned in the university ending a 85-day standoff  as  Pro Vice-Chancellor Y Yugindro Singh, appointed by suspended vice-chancellor Adya Prasad Pandey, entered the campus on Thursday evening.

The university was in a state of turmoil over a long-drawn  agitation by students and teachers  against the vice-chancellor.  The Ministry of Human Resources Development suspended Prof Pandey by issuing an order on September 17 till the completion of the enquiry against him.

Meanwhile, student movement has been restricted in the university campus and the students  are not allowed to go outside the hostel without permission of police.

More security personnel have been deployed in the university campus.
