Meghalaya: Mamata Banerjee launches MFI WE scheme, promises Rs. 1,000 per month to women

Shillong/IBNS: Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday promised Rs. 1,000 per month to all women of Meghalaya launching the MFI WE scheme as her party aims to make a mark in the hill state.

Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, announced the TMC's flagship Meghalaya Financial Inclusion for Women Empowerment Scheme or MFI WE scheme in presence of other party leaders.

Under this scheme, a direct transfer will be made to a woman of every household as guaranteed universal income support of Rs. 1,000 per month.

This is in tune with the TMC government's Lakshmir Bhandar scheme in West Bengal where the incumbent gives similar financial support to women, of course inviting the Opposition's digs and jibes.

After the 2021 victory over the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the TMC is aiming to expand beyond West Bengal and Meghalaya is one of its bets.

Much to the party's disappointment, the TMC had failed to make a mark in the Goa assembly elections which were held earlier this year.

Along with Meghalaya, Banerjee's party, which runs a three-term government in West Bengal, is aiming to make a mark in Tripura which will also go to polls in 2023.
