Meghalaya Assembly bypoll result : Congress retains Ampati seat
Guwahati, May 31 (IBNS) : The opposition Congress on Thursday retained the Ampati Assembly seat in Meghalaya and emerged as the single largest party in the 60-member House with 21 seats.
The Congress won the Ampati bypoll in South West Garo Hills district as former Chief Minister, Mukul Sangma‘s daughter Miani Dalbot Shira defeated the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) candidate Clement G Momin by 3,191 votes after results were declared following final counting of votes.
Polling for the Ampati byelection was held on May 28 with a high voters’ turnout of 90.55 percent.
Out of the total votes polled, Congress candidate Miani D Shira got 14,259 votes, while NPP nominee and former minister Clement G Momin secured 11,068 votes.
Independent candidate Subhankar Koch managed only 360 votes while 208 voters opted for NOTA.
The bypoll was necessitated after Mukul Sangma of the Congress decided to vacate the seat leave the Ampati seat and the party's strength in the Assembly came down to 20.
In the last assembly election in Meghalaya, which produced a hung Assembly, the Congress won 21 seats, while NPP secured 19. The BJP managed 2 seats, United Democratic Party (UDP) got 6, People's Democratic Front (PDF) cornered 4, Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP) claimed 2 and NCP and KHNM got one each. Three seats went to independents.
The Conrad Sangma-led government was formed after BJP, UDP, PDF, HSPDP and one Independent MLA supported the NPP, the second largest party.
