Massive security arrangement in Assam ahead of final NRC draft publication

Guwahati, July 28 (IBNS)  :  Ahead of the publication of the final draft of NRC on July 30, a massive security arrangement has been made in Assam to pre-empt any possible unrest and maintain peace.

The Union Home Ministry has already sent over 22,000 central paramilitary troops in order to beef up security in Assam and adjoining states.

Security has been beefed up in all NRC Seva Kendras (NSKs) as well.

Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Kuladhar Saikia said the  Assam police have already gone for sectoral plans as districts have been divided into different sectors and zones for proper manning.

“We have identified the sensitive areas and accordingly security forces have been deployed," Saikia said.

The Assam DGP further said that the police would take stern action against anybody found to be taking the law into their own hands.

A senior official of Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) said a large number of central para-military personnel have arrived in Assam.

“The Union Home Ministry has sent the companies to maintain law and order.  I appeal to the people of Assam not to believe in rumours spread through WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook,” the  official said.

Assam is going to witness a momentous event on July 30 as the final draft of the updated National Register of Citizens (NRC) will be published supposedly containing the names of all bona fide Indian citizens.

The first draft of the updated NRC included the names of 1.90 crore people out of a total 3.29 applicants from Assam recognising them as legal citizens of India. However, the list sparked off a huge controversy as it allegedly included many questionable names and also excluded many Indian citizens.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on July 26 night reviewed law and order situation at a meeting with all Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs) of all districts in Guwahati.

At the meeting, Sonowal took stock of the measures to tackle any law and order problem that might arise following the publication of the final draft- a highly sensitive issue in the state.

Sonowal reviewed with the DCs and SPs the law and order situation as well as measures being taken to tackle any untoward situation.
