Massive fire breaks out in Kolkata chemical factory, firefighting ops underway

Kolkata, Oct 11 (IBNS): A major fire broke out in a chemical factory-cum-warehouse in Kolkata's Taratala area on Wednesday, reports said.

According to reports, the fire was first seen at around 10:30 am. inside the factory-cum-godown at Transport Depot Road.

As many as ten fire tenders and local police rushed to the scene and firemen are still fighting to douse the massive blaze.

During the firefighting operation, several loud explosions were heard from the factory.

However, no casualty has been reported so far in the incident while fire officials claimed that none was trapped inside the burning factory.

"We are trying to reach the source of the fire and hope the blaze will be taken under control very soon," a senior official of state fire and emergency services told IBNS.

Meanwhile, state fire minister and Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee visited the scene.

"As a huge cache of chemicals, including Ammonium powder, are stored inside the factory-cum-warehouse, the fire spread very quickly and it becomes very challenging for firefighters to douse the blaze," Sovan Chatterjee told the media after primary inspection.

However, exact reason behind the fire is still unknown.

A fire official said, "After dousing the blaze and completing cooling operations, we will start investigation into the reason behind the fire and adequate legal action will be taken if anything found unlawful here."

Meanwhile, city's traffic police officials said that Transport Depot Road has been closed for vehicular traffic for firefighting operations.
