The man whose car hit Indian student Nilam Shinde in California on February 14 drove away after the accident, leaving her severely injured on the road, details emerged in the media about the accident revealed.

The Sacramento Police Department arrested 58-year-old Lawrence Gallow five days later, NDTV reported on Thursday evening.

The "hit-and-run collision" was reported from Fair Oaks Blvd and Cadillac Dr in Sacramento just before 7 pm, the police said.

On reaching the location, officers found Nilam Shinde on the ground.

"Responding officers located a female adult on the ground. The vehicle involved in the collision fled the scene prior to police arrival. Sacramento Fire Department personnel transported the female to an area hospital for serious injuries," the police said.

Shinde, who hails from Maharashtra's Satara and is a postgraduate student in California, was then taken to a nearby hospital.

She is in coma after suffering injuries on her chest and head after a four-wheeler hit her.

Meanwhile, her family has sought an urgent visa but was only getting slots for the next year.

Flagging the issue, NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule requested External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to help Shinde's family with the visa.

Supriya wrote on X, "Student Neelam Shinde has met with an accident in the USA and is hospitalized in a local hospital. Her father, Tanaji Shinde, from Satara, Maharashtra, India, urgently needs to visit his daughter due to a medical emergency. Tanaji Shinde has applied for an urgent visa to the USA and requires assistance."

With interference from the Ministry of External Affairs, the family has now got an appointment for the visa interview on Friday morning.
