Bhopal/IBNS: A man was shot dead at a marriage party in Madhya Pradesh, allegedly organised by followers of jailed ‘godman’ Rampal on Sunday, media reports said.

Three people have been arrested in the case that happened on Sunday, said the police.

A protest was held in the city last evening. The police are yet to confirm if the men belong to any right-wing group.

The wedding function was organized by the followers of jailed 'godman' Rampal.

Rampal, who hails from Haryana, is serving life sentence in connection with the murder of six people-five women and an infant.

Amit Verma, a senior officer of the local police, told the NDTV channel the armed men gatecrashed the function alleging that such weddings are organized "illegally".

Rampal's followers say he follows a different wedding ceremony, popularly known as Ramaini, which takes only 17 minutes. The attackers have alleged that such a marriage is against the Hindu religion.

“At around 2.00 pm, 10-15 people reached there [the venue of wedding] and alleged that the wedding was being performed in a wrong manner. They beat up people present there and opened fire," he told the mediapersons.

Cellphone videos of the attack, which went online, showed complete pandemonium as panic stricken guests ran around trying to get away from the men. They were seen carrying hefty poles and bamboos.
