Mamata mocks Adhir for shirtless protest

Kolkata, Aug 18 (IBNS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee mocked the manner in which West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee president Adhir Chowdhury took off his shirt to protest during the 12-hour general strike called by his party in the state on Tuesday.

Congress workers had started a rally led by Adhir Chowdhury in favour of 12-hour general strike at Beharampur in Murshidabad district of West Bengal.

When police stopped them, Adhir Chowdhury took off his shirt to protest against the state administration.

Mocking the manner of Adhir Chowdhury's protest, Mamata Banerjee said from a party meeting at Nazrul Mancha: "We will never allow any bandh or shutdown in Bengal."

"Some people are taking off their shirts just to get pictures in newspapers and footage in TV channels. But they  should understand that what suits Sourav Ganguly doesn't suit others. One may become a photo while trying to create photos," she said.

Mamata Banerjee was making reference to former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly's act of  taking off his jersey to celebrate victory after defeating hosts in the  Natwest Trophy at the Lords in England in 2002.

When he was asked about Banerjee's statement, Adhir Chowdhury told IBNS: "Mamata Banerjee also wears 'chappals' to portray herself as Bengal's Mother  Teresa. She has said one may become a photo while trying to create photos. What does she mean
by that? Will she turn me into a photo by killing me? Let her try, I am not scared of it. She has already turned many people into
photographs, we all know that very well."

Meanwhile, WB BJP president Rahul Sinha said in a press conference, here, "Doing such actions only makes him a laughing item."
