Mamata Banerjee to hold rally in Hooghly on same ground today where Modi visited Monday

Kolkata/IBNS: In a counter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rally, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will hold a public meeting on the same ground, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stalwart addressed a crowd a couple of days ago, on Wednesday.

Banerjee is scheduled to hold the rally at Dunlop Football Ground in Chinsurah, Hooghly at 1 pm.

The political climate in the poll-bound state is already heated up after India's premier investigating agency interrogated the wife of Banerjee's parliamentarian nephew Abhishek Banerjee, Rujira Naroola, on Tuesday in connection with a coal scam case.

On Monday, Abhishek's sister-in-law Menoka Gambhir was also quizzed by the Central Bureau Investigation (CBI) in the same case.

While the BJP has asked for a fair trial so that the "truth" comes out, Abhishek issued a strong statement alleging vendetta politics.

Abhishek tweeted, "At 2pm today, the CBI served a notice in the name of my wife. We have full faith in the law of the land. However, if they think they can use these ploys to intimidate us, they are mistaken. We are not the ones who would ever be cowed down."

Mamata Banerjee, who is expected to speak on the matter in the rally, on Tuesday sent out a strong message of standing beside her family by visiting Abhishek's residence minutes before the CBI officials arrived for the quizzing.

On the flip side, police on Tuesday night arrested BJP leader Rakesh Singh from Galsi area in East Burdwan district of West Bengal in connection with a narcotic case registered with New Alipore Police Station.

Earlier on Feb 19, Kolkata Police arrested leaders of BJP's youth wing BJYM, Pamela Goswami and Prabir Kumar Dey, from New Alipore area with nearly 100 grams of cocaine and during interrogation, police came to know about Watganj area's BJP leader Rakesh Singh.

In his rally, Modi on Monday targeted the Trinamool Congress government over corruption, urging voters to bring the "asol poriborton" or real change, something which he felt Mamata Banerjee had failed to make ousting the Left in 2011, in the upcoming polls.

Mamata Banerjee, who is spearheading the Trinamool's campaign in the state aggressively, is facing a stiff challenge from a spirited BJP this time with the Left-Congress alliance fighting to stay relevant in the state politics.
