Mamata Banerjee issued show cause notice for alleged breach of Model Code of Conduct

Kolkata, Apr 14 (IBNS) West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has been issued show cause notice by the Election Commission on Thursday for an alleged breach of Model Code of Conduct during election campaign in Asansol.

This was disclosed by Nasim Zaidi, the Chief Election Commissioner of India in Kolkata.

Speaking to media during a day-long visit to the state, the CEC said urgent legal action has also been initiated against Anubrata Mandal, the Birbhum district Trinamool Congress President for his alleged comment involving intimidation to other parties.

He, however, refused to divulge the details of such action but assured that the Commission would take all possible steps to ensure free and fair poll in West Bengal.  

All the three Election Commissioners, Dr. Nasim Zaidi, A.K.Joti and Om Prakash Rawat along with the Deputy Election Commissioner Sandeep Saxena and other high level officials met the leaders of the major political parties one after another soon after their arrival.

The Commission, said  Zaidi, has decided to introduce some additional steps on the basis of suggestions of political parties.

The steps include information about voter turnout at booth level at 5 pm and also at the scheduled closing hours of 6 pm on the respective polling days through SMS.

The Presiding Officers, he added, will also be asked to ensure the number of electors standing in que at the end of the scheduled closing time and a report in this regard will also have to be prepared by the Presiding Officer.

The Chief Election Commissioner further reiterated that any act of intimidation will be dealt strictly and all officials has been asked to work fearlessly to ensure a flawless election in the remaining phases.

The CEC also informed the press that the final publication of the electoral role for 51 enclaves which has been included in the country from Bangladesh has also been made.
