Mamata Banerjee expresses outrage at Manipur horror video, calls it 'act of barbarism'

Kolkata/IBNS/UNI: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday expressed outrage at the horrific video from Manipur showing the brutal treatment of two women by a mob.

"Heartbroken and outraged to witness the horrific video from Manipur showing the brutal treatment of two women by a frenzied mob," Banerjee said.

"No words can express the pain and anguish of witnessing the violence inflicted on marginalized women," she added.

Calling it "an act of barbarism", Banerjee said such "inhumane actions" by the miscreants must be condemned by one and all and justice be ensured to the victims.

A Trinamool Congress delegation of MPs met the Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey in Imphal and discussed the turmoil that has gripped the North Eastern state for over two and a half months.

"They exchanged meaningful insights on containing the situation and restoring normalcy. The suffering of people in Manipur knows no bounds," the party tweeted.

Attacking the BJP, the Trinamool alleged that the saffron outfit was "reluctant" to address the issues plaguing Manipur and provide a viable solution.

"They failed the people all over again. To extend their support, our delegation met the people and heard their concerns," the party tweeted.

Alleging that the BJP's inaction has cost lives, the Trinamool alleged that leaders of the Centre's ruling coalition had played the role of "mute spectator" while several people lost their lives.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemning the incident of the two women beign paraded naked in the North Eastern state, the Trinamool said: "After an astonishing 79 days of silence, PM Narendra Modi finally graces Manipur with his attention".

"But wait, where was he all this time? Gallivanting on foreign visits to the United States, France & UAE, Leading the inauguration of a new terminal at Port Blair Airport, Convening NDA allies' meeting to prepare for 2024 Lok Sabha elections," the party said.

"If misplaced priorities had a human face, the PM would make for the ideal brand ambassador, ' the party quipped.

The party wondered why the Prime Minister did not appeal for peace in his statement and posed what action would be taken against Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh "for failing as an administrator in every possible way since May 3".

"How is the Union govt planning to address the issue? What action will be taken against perpetrators in the other cases of violence? Why didn't you apologise to Manipur for continuing your foreign trips even as people were being killed mercilessly? " Trinamool asked.
