Maharashtra quota stir: Life partially affected by shutdown call

| @indiablooms | Aug 09, 2018, at 05:59 pm

Mumbai, Aug 9 (IBNS): Life was partially affected in some parts of Maharashtra on Thursday as Maratha leaders called a 10-hour shutdown across the state, barring Navi Mumbai and Thane, to press for their demand for reservation in job and education.

According to media reports, no major untoward incident has so far been reported.

Even though Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said that the Government is committed to bringing in the reservation, the  Maratha Kranti Morcha, which is spearheading the movement demands the Government issue a written assurance and announce a roadmap as to how it will be implemented.

In Mumbai, all State Transport (ST) depots remained shut with no buses plying from Mumbai Central, Parel or Dadar depots. According to reports, at least 19,000 state buses are off the road since midnight.

Shops, business establishments, schools and colleges remained closed in Pune due to the state-wide bandh. Vegetable markets were also closed. Media reports quoted  Pune Police Commissioner K Venkateshan as saying that additional and deputy commissioners were monitoring the situation. Internet services have been suspended in 7 tehsils of Pune district.

The reports said agitators put up roadblocks on the Mumbai-Goa Highway, Mumbai-Nasik Highway and the old Mumbai-Pune Highway. There were reports of disruption in traffic in Latur, Jaina, Solapur and Buldharna districts.

Although Nashik was normal, there were roadblocks, processions and sit-ins and similar agitations in Nagpur.
