Maharashtra police saves woman from suicide attempt

Thane, Jul 23 (UNI ) A 22-year-old woman from Ambivili of Kalyan, attempting suicide for the second time, was saved by a police officer in the Thane Police quarters on Tuesday.

Chief of the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) Santosh Kadam informed media that Preeti Kini climbed up to the fifth floor of the multi-storied policemen quarters situated in the city around 0900 hrs and was sitting on the ledge of the building waiting to jump down.

One of the occupants of the house spotted her and raised an alarm following which the API Vishwas Jadhav of the Shanti Nagar police station residing on the same floor rushed out of the house and pulled her to safety risking his life.

The woman, who was injured in an earlier attempt to commit the suicide on July 17, was rushed to the civil hospital for treatment, police said.

The police said no body knows how she sneaked into the building situated just opposite the Thane Rural police headquarters.

The city police are investigating the crime, police said.

On learning about the exceptional act of police officer, Thane Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar lauded him for his bravery and presence of mind in saving the woman.

Meanwhile, it may be recalled that the woman was booked by the city police on the alleged charges of attempt to commit suicide in front of the District Rural Police headquarters.

The police said an offense under section 309 of the IPC has been registered against the alleged accused whose name was given as Priti Kini/ Pagare with the Thane Nagar police station.

On July 17 at about 0600 hrs, the accused came to the main entrance of the police headquarters and stabbed herself with a cut glass. The guards on duty saw blood oozing out of her abdomen as she raised an alarm and attempted to stab herself which they prevented.

Upon interrogation, she informed said her in-laws were not allowing her to meet her husband and hence she wanted to commit suicide.

The policemen on duty immediately rushed her to the Thane Civil hospital where she is undergoing treatment .
