Maharashtra ‘Godman’ arrested: 58 victims, hidden cameras expose chilling abuse network
A 67-year-old self-styled astrologer has been arrested in Nashik for allegedly sexually exploiting multiple women under the guise of spiritual healing, in a case that has sent shockwaves across Maharashtra.
The accused, Ashok Kharat, is charged with repeatedly raping a 35-year-old woman after allegedly intoxicating and hypnotising her during so-called ritual sessions, police said. Investigators now believe the abuse extended far beyond a single victim.
According to the FIR, Kharat—who referred to himself as “Captain” due to his past in the Merchant Navy—would lure women to his office with promises of solving personal and family problems.
Once there, he allegedly administered intoxicants and used fear tactics, including threats of death and references to occult practices, to sexually assault them.
The scale of the alleged crimes emerged after police recovered a pen drive containing explicit video clips involving 58 different women, reportedly recorded using hidden CCTV cameras installed inside his office.
Authorities have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by IPS officer Tejaswini Satpute to probe the case. The Nashik Crime Branch is currently analysing the seized footage and documents.
Kharat operated out of an office named ‘Oakus Property Dealers and Developers’ in Nashik’s upscale Canada Corner area, though police allege the premises were used for criminal activities rather than real estate work.
He had built a reputation as a powerful spiritual figure, with alleged connections to influential political and business circles. Kharat also headed the Shri Ishanyeshwar Temple Trust in Sinnar and owned a temple and retreat in Mirgaon, frequented by prominent visitors.
Covert arrest operation
Police carried out a carefully planned operation to arrest him from his farmhouse. To avoid tipping him off, officers created a diversion by shouting “thief” outside his residence, gaining entry amid the chaos before apprehending him from his bedroom.
During subsequent raids, officials recovered a pistol, live cartridges, and several documents from his properties, all of which are now under investigation.
Political fallout
The case has triggered a political controversy, with opposition leaders questioning the links between the accused and influential figures.
Sushma Andhare criticised the alleged patronage extended to such individuals and demanded accountability from senior state leadership.
