Indore, June 6 (IBNS): A protest rally by farmers turned violent on Tuesday when shots were fired, leaving four people killed, in Mandsaur district of Madhya Pradesh, media reports said.

Curfew has been imposed in Mandsaur and Pipliamandi.

State Home Minister Bhupendra Singh told NDTV that the police did not shoot at the crowd in Mandsaur.

"There was no firing by the police, an investigation has been launched," he said, adding that bullets were shot by "anti-social elements," the Minister told the news channel.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has ordered a judicial probe into the incident.

Moreover, he also announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the kin of the deceased and assistance of Rs 1 lakh to the injured.

Congress vice-president attacked the government over the incident and tweeted: "This Govt is at war with the farmers of our country#Mandsaur #MadhyaPradesh."
