Madhya Pradesh: Farmers meet CM at the 'fasting' venue, Opposition terms the fasting as 'drama'

Bhopal, Jun 10 (IBNS): Farmers from all over Madhya Pradesh have been meeting the state's chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan at the Dussehra Maidan in Bhopal, on Saturday, where the CM is on an indefinite fast, according to media reports.

The CM began his fasting on Saturday to end the violence that has rocked parts of the state, especially Mandsaur, following protests by farmers.

Last week, farmers in Mandsaur began agitating, demanding better prices for their produce and for debt relief. On Tuesday, police had to resort to firing when the protesters turned violent and damaged property and set vehicles on fire. Five farmers died on the spot and one more succumbed to his injures on Friday.

On Saturday, the CM said that he will continue with his regular Mantralaya work sitting at the fasting venue and also meet the farmers if they wanted to speak to him, media reports said.

In between he also welcomed President Pranab Mukherjee through a tweeted message, "We warmly welcome Rashtrapati Shri Pranab Mukherjee to the state of Madhya Pradesh."

Tweeting in Hindi, BJPMadhyaPradesh said that who else can understand the sorrows of a farmer but the son of a farmer, CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan?

Opposition parties, including Congress, have called the CM's move a 'drama'.

Madhya Pradesh is set to go for polls next year.
