Lucknow, Mar 7 (IBNS): A standoff followed by an encounter is continuing on the outskirts of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh where the Anti-Terror Squad is attempting to capture a suspected militant holed up in a safe house.

The area has been cordoned off to capture the terrorist who could be an ISIS operative and linked to a train blast this morning in Madhya Pradesh in which nine were wounded.

Reports said the terrorist used "chilli bombs" against the cops engaged in the operation in which some 20-odd commandos are engaged. The standoff in Thakurganj area near Lucknow was also confirmed by UP police chief Javeed Ahmed.

Senior police official Daljit Chaudhary told media: "Had received inputs about presence of some suspects in Kanpur and Lucknow."

He said one person has been arrested from Kanpur.

"The suspect inside the building is possibly from Lucknow," Daljit Chaudhary said.

The incident occurred at a time when Uttar Pradesh is gearing up to vote in the last phase of polling on Wednesday.

The result is scheduled to be announced on Mar 11.
