New Delhi/UNI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday extended support to Priyanka Gandhi, who was detained early on Monday morning on her way to Lakhimpur Kheri, where eight people have died, including four farmers who were allegedly crushed to death.

"Priyanka, I know you won't step back - they are stunned by your courage. In this non-violent fight for justice, we will make the country's Annadata (farmers) win," Rahul Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.

He also added hashtags to the tweet saying 'no fear' and calling the incident 'Lakhimpur farmer massacre'.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi, along with other party leaders were taken into custody in Sitapur after night long drama as the Congress leader was on her way to Lakhimpur Kheri.

UP police tried to stop Priyanka at several places after she started her journey around midnight from Lucknow .

Police could finally detain her and other Congress leaders at Sitapur, after they failed at Itaunja toll and at Sidhauli early on Monday morning.

Uttar Pradesh chief Ajay Kumar Lallu and Rajya Sabha member Deepender Hooda were also detained.

Farmers have alleged that the son of Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra, and other supporters crushed farmers without any provocation, and also shot one farmer dead. The Minister has meanwhile said that stones were pelted on the convoy, and has also said that his son Ashish Mishra was not present at the spot.

Four people who were in the SUVs that allegedly crushed farmers also died after a car overturned. Farmers later also set two vehicles to fire.

Police said an FIR has been registered against 14 people, including Ashish Mishra, in connection with the death of farmers. Case has been registered under 302,120B, and 147 of the IPC on the complaint of the farmers.

Similarly, a counter FIR has been lodged against the farmers by the BJP leaders too.
