Kolkata, Jul 12 (IBNS): Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and TMC ruled Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation's councilor Anindya Chatterjee was arrested on Tuesday for alleged extortion, officials said.

According to reports, Anindya Chatterjee was allegedly forcing a 78-year-old man to pay 12 lakh for building's renovation and extension works. The aged resident of Salt Lake AE Block, Santosh Lodh, lodged a complaint at Bidhannagar North Police Station against Chatterjee in June.

Police on Tuesday morning detained Anindya Chatterjee and after hour-long interrogation arrested him in the noon. Chatterjee has been charged under several IPC sections, including 34, 384, 386, 387, 388 and 389, officials said.

According to sources, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina earlier called West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and complained that Anindya Chatterjee had demanded extortion from her known person, who was constructing a building in Salt Lake.

After receiving several complaints, Mamata Banerjee directed Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate to arrest Anindya Chatterjee, sources further said.

During last Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation elections in 2015, Anindya Chatterjee and his companions were accused for spreading violence in Salt Lake city, jamming polling stations, casting false votes and beating oppositions' candidates, voters and media personnel.

However, Anindya Chatterjee was produced in Bidhannagar Sub-Divisional Court in the afternoon and sent to judicial custody for 14 days.

Meanwhile, TMC will be taking strict steps against Anindya Chatterjee very soon, party sources said.
