Kolkata, Jan 20 (IBNS): Protesting against the death of two local youths during a skirmish between villagers and police force over a power-grid installation in Bhangar, a large number of Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) activists, led by CPI-M MLA Sujan Chakraborty, party leaders Kanti Ganguly and Nepaldeb Bhattacharya, staged agitation in front of Milan Mela ground in Kolkata, where two-day-long Bengal Global Business Summit is currently underway, on Friday evening.

According to reports, at around 4:25 pm, protesters had blocked Parama Island crossing nearby and when they were trying to enter Milan Mela compound, engaged in a scuffle with the police force.

Police detained a large number of agitators, including CPI-M leaders Sujan Chakraborty and Kanti Ganguly, from the spot.

Sujan Chakraborty alleged that police lathicharged protesters and beat party leaders badly, leaving several activists injured.

Police, however, denied the allegation and claimed that security personnel handled the situation peacefully, avoiding any untoward incident.

Due to the protests, traffic at the area was party disrupted for nearly an hour.

However, road blockade and agitation at Parama Island were withdrawn later, while booked activist-leaders of the party have been brought to Kolkata Police headquarters at Lalbazar, according to the last update came in.

Indian President Pranab Mukherjee on Friday inaugurated the third edition of Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS), hosted by the West Bengal government to showcase investment opportunities in the state.
