Kerala polls: Oommen Chandy wins despite UDF debacle

Thiruvananthapuram, May 19 (IBNS) Although the United Democratic Front (UDF) has been long overtaken by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the Kerala Assembly poll counting, UDF leader and Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy has won from Puthuppally in Kottayam district, according to media reports.

Oommen Chandy defeated his nearest rival Jaick C. Thomas of CPM by 27,092 votes.

Former CM of Kerala and veteran CPM leader,  VS Achuthanandan defeated BJP's C Krishnakumar by 27142 votes to win Malampuzha.

Leading UDF ministers lK Babu, Shibu Baby John and KP Mohanan lost. 

CPM leader Pinarayi Vijayan has won from Dharamadom in Kannur district, defeating nearest rival Mambaram Divakaran of the Congress by 36,905 votes.

Although veteran BJP leader O Rajagopal has won the party its first ever Assembly seat in Kerala, the state's BJP president, Kummanam Rajasekharan, lost the Vattiyoorkavu seat to Congress’s K. Muraleedharan.

Tweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, " In Kerala, the persistence of the Party has paid off today & we will become an even stronger voice of the people."

He also tweeted, " I salute all those who built the BJP in Kerala, brick by brick, decade after decade. It is due to them that we are seeing this day."

CPI-M on its official twitter account said, "KalakkiKerala, Well done Kerala! #LDFSweepsKerala".

CPI-M also tweeted, "#LDF Clean Sweeps Thrissur and Kollam Dists. Makes major inroads in Ernakulam, a traditional UDF stronghold."
