Kashmir: Protests erupt in Srinagar, Bandipora against rape of minor

Srinagar, May 12 (UNI) Massive protests were held in Bandipora of north Kashmir and this summer capital on Sunday, in protest against the rape of a three-year-old girl in the valley.

Police arrested the accused and initiated investigation after the family members of the minor filed a complaint in Police Station Sumbal at Bandipora on May 9.

Scores of people hit the streets at various places in Sumbal, including Shilvat, Dangerpora, Nowgam, Inderkoot, Gadkhod, Shahtulpora and Shadipora, demanding exemplary punishment for the accused.

Meanwhile, traffic was disrupted for some time, when the protestors blocked the Srinagar-Bandipora road in Sumbal. It was only after assurance by Deputy Commissioner, Bandipora Shahbaz Ahmad Mirza and SSP, Bandipora Rahul Malik, the protestors dispersed and traffic was restored on the road.

A protest rally was also held from Lal Chowk, the never centre of the city, to Press Enclave. Holding placards, the demonstrators demanded strict action against the accused.
