Kashmir: At least 15 killed as bus plunges into gorge in Kishtwar district

Srinagar, Sept 14 (IBNS): At least 15 people were killed as a bus plunged into a gorge in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday morning.

The accident took place at around 8:30 am.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of J&K's Kishtwar district, Rajinder Gupta, told IBNS: "At least 15 persons have been killed and 11 others are seriously injured as a 25-seater minibus (JK 17 0663) skidded off road and plunged into a over-300-foot gorge near the Chenab riverbed at Dandaran, near Thakrai, in mountainous Kishtwar district."

"The bus packed with passengers was going to Kishtwar town from Keshwan's Thakrai. Eleven passengers of the bus died on the spot while 15 injured were airlifted by a Pawan Hans helicopter to a Jammu hospital where four more persons succumbed," Gupta said.

Deputy Commissioner of Kishtwar, Sh. Angrez Singh Rana, told IBNS: "Jammu and Kashmir government has announced an ex gratia relief of Rs. 5 lakh each to the next kin of the deceased. We are also giving Rs. 50,000 each to the injured persons."
