Karnataka seer Shivakumara Swami dies at 111

Bengaluru, Jan 21 (IBNS): Shivakumara Swamy, the head of Karnataka's Sree Siddaganga Mutt, passed away on Monday.

He was 111.

Swamy was considered to be a well known religious practitioner of Lingayatism faith.

He was in ventilator for last 15 days.

Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy along with his predecessor BS Yeddyurappa confirmed Swamy's death in a press briefing.

Condoling Swamy's death, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, "HH Dr. Sree Sree Sree Sivakumara Swamigalu remained at the forefront of ensuring better healthcare and education facilities for the marginalised. He represents the best of our traditions of compassionate service, spirituality and protecting the rights of the underprivileged."

Congress president Rahul Gandhi tweeted, "I am sorry to hear about the passing of Shivakumar Swami Ji, Pontiff of the Siddaganga Mutt. Swami Ji was respected & revered by millions of Indians, from all religions & communities. His passing leaves behind a deep spiritual void. My condolences to all his followers."
