Karnataka hijab row: No urgent hearing, says Supreme Court
New Delhi/IBNS: The Supreme Court on Friday refused to urgently hear a Muslim girl's plea challenging the Karnataka High Court's order of allowing educational institutions to open but without religious clothing on campus until its final judgement, amid the row over ban on hijab in schools and colleges in the southern state.
"Don't spread these things to a national level. We will interfere only at an appropriate time," Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana said.
"Please do not spread it to larger levels. We know what is happening. Think over, is it proper to bring these things to Delhi? The national level? If there is anything wrong, we will protect...," the CJI added.
Schools and colleges were shut down earlier this week after row over ban on hijab wearing inside campus escalated.
The protest against the ban, which first began in Udupi, spread to many other educational institutions where girls were restricted entry in hijabs.
As the conflict escalated, in a recent video, some schools boys with a saffron scarfs were seen shouting "Jai Shree Ram" slogan at a Muslim girl in hijab while she was entering the college. The girl shouted back "Allah Hu Akbar" and authorities escorted her to the college premises.
A three-member bench of the Karnataka High Court will resume hearing on Monday.
