Karnataka CM BS Yeddyurappa to face Supreme Court test today
Bangalore, May 18 (IBNS): The Supreme Court will hear petition that challenged the invitation made by Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala to BJP strongman BS Yeddyurappa to form the government in the state.
Yeddyurappa took oath as the Chief Minister of the southern state on Thursday.
The entire invitation episode has triggered a political row in Karnataka.
The Supreme Court had earlier on Thursday said it will not Yeddyurappa from taking oath as the CM.
However, the apex court had said his survival as the top leader of the state will depend on the final verdict.
Sources told NDTV that the Supreme Court is likely to cut down 15-day time-limit given to Mr Yeddyurappa by the Governor to prove the majority.
In a major political turn, the Karnataka unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday evening announced that its leader BS Yeddyurappa will be taking oath as the chief minister of the south Indian state on Thursday after governor Vajubhai Vala invited the party to form government.
The Governor gave BJP a period of 15 days to prove majority, said reports.
BJP had won 104 seats in the Assembly polls.
Meanwhile, playing with the strategy of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to assume powers in Karnataka, the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) will now stake claims to form governments in Goa and Bihar respectively, as the two political outfits had emerged as single largest parties in the two states, media reports said.
The move by the Congress and the RJD have genesis in Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala's decision to invite BJP's BS Yeddyurappa to take oath as the CM of the state.
The Congress has raised the Goa, Manipur instances where it was not asked to form the government despite emerging as the single largest party.
Taking a cue from the Karnataka slug-fest, former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi said he will meet Bihar Governor Satya Pal Malik at 1 pm on Friday. In the 2015 Bihar state polls, former Chief Minister Lalu Prasad's RJD emerged as the single largest party.
Though the grand alliance- which was formed by RJD, Janata Dal (United) and Congress- constituted the government in 2015, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's JD(U) broke out of the alliance to join hands with the BJP in 2017.
In Goa, which went to polls in 2017, the Congress emerged as the single largest party but the BJP formed the government with the support of a regional party in the state.
