Karnataka bypolls: Voting underway in three LS, two assembly seats

Bengaluru, Nov 3 (IBNS): In a crucial fight between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress-Janata Dal (United), voting for bypolls in three Lok Sabha and two assembly seats of Karnataka are underway on Saturday, media reports said.

The bypolls are taking place in Ballari, Mandya, Shivamogga Lok Sabha seats and Ramanagara, Jamkhandi assembly constituencies.

The Congress and the JD(S), which are running a coalition government in the southern state, have fielded joint candidates in all the seats.

In Ramanagara, JD(S) candidate Anitha Kumaraswamy has been given a walkover after BJP candidate L Chandrasekhar left his party to join the Congress.

The bypoll has become necessary in the Ramanagara seat after Karnataka Chief Minister and JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy, who had contested also from Channapatna, resigned.

The Shivamogga Lok Sabha seat fell vacant after former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa resigned to contest the assembly election in 2018.

The Ballari seat, which is a BJP bastion, fell vacant after BJP leader B Sreeramulu, who had won from the Molakalmuru assembly seat earlier in 2018, resigned.

In a similar way, the Mandya seat is vacant as JD(S) leader CS Puttaraju, who is presently a Karnataka assembly member, resigned.

In Jamkhandi, the Congress has fielded Anand Nyamagouda, son of senior leader Siddu Nyamagouda, whose death has left the seat vacant.

The poll results will be declared on Nov 6.
