Mumbai, Jul 28 (IBNS): JW Marriott Chandigarh has been slapped with a penalty charge of Rs. 25000 by the Chandigarh Excise and Taxation Department for making actor Rahul Bose pay Rs. 442.50 for two bananas.

The Chandigarh Excise and Taxation Department had sought an explanation from JW Marriott after issuing them a showcause notice on Saturday for charging tax on a tax-free item.

The hotel reportedly violated section 11 of CGST.

An investigation has been initiated into the matter by Mandip Singh Brar — Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner and Excise and Taxation Commissioner after Rahul Bose tweeted that JW Marriott hotel has charged him a whopping bill of Rs 442.50, including GST, for serving him two bananas.

Taking to Twitter recently, Rahul, who was in Chandigarh, narrated an incident that he had ordered two bananas at his room while working out in the gym.

However, when he received the bill, the actor was shocked to see that the price of two bananas was Rs. 442.50.

In a sarcastic tone, the actor wrote on Twitter, "You have to see this to believe it. Who said fruit wasn’t harmful to your existence? Ask the wonderful folks at
@JWMarriottChd #goingbananas #howtogetfitandgobroke #potassiumforkings"

These bananas “are too good for me”, Rahul Bose said in the video posted on Twitter.

The actor also showcased the bill which revealed that the price of the fruit platter was Rs 375 along with 9 per cent CGST at Rs 33.75 and another 9 per cent UTGST for Rs 33.75.

However, bananas are categorised under “fresh fruits that are tax-free,” said reports.
