Agartala/UNI: The Ministry of Law and Justice today issued a formal notification appointing Justice Akil Abdulhamid Kureshi of Bombay High Court as the 5th Chief Justice of Tripura.

He will be replacing incumbent Chief Justice Sanjay Karol who has been transferred to Patna High Court.

Justice Kureshi’s appointment will be effective from the date he takes charge at Chief Justice of Tripura.

He was promoted as Chief Justice a few months ago and Supreme Court Collegium had recommended him for the Madhya Pradesh High Court on May 10 this year but the Centre did not agree.

The Collegium reconsidered him as Chief Justice of Tripura on September 5 last but the ministry sat over the proposal even as all other transfers and promotions took place.

Meanwhile, the lawyers association of Gujarat High Court filed a petition in the apex court against the dilly-dallying of the law ministery over the implementation of  the recommendation of Collegium in regard to Justice Kureshi's appointment.

The solicitor general Tushar Mehta had apprised the Supreme Court that the process of posting was delayed due to administrative requirements.

Born on March 7, 1960 Justice Akil Kureshi had joined Gujarat high court as a judge in the year 2004 and served there till November 2018.

He was then posted to Bombay High Court.

Rajinder Kashyap, joint secretary to the government of India today issued his appointment in Tripura.
