Raipur 24 July (UNI): Janta Congress Chhattisgarh president and former chief minister Ajit Jogi on Wednesday demanded a 27 per cent reservation for other backward classes in Chhattisgarh in line with Madhya Pradesh.

Issuing a statement on Wednesday, Jogi said the Madhya Pradesh government had passed a bill for other backward classes in state Assembly, giving them 27 per cent reservation. "Considering 51% OBC population in Chhattisgarh, it is necessary to give 27% reservation to OBC in the state," he said.

He said that chief minister Bhupesh Baghel himself belonged to backward class. Chhattisgarh Assembly Speaker and National President of OBC department of Congress too hail from backward classes, he said. Jogi also said that during his tenure as chief minister, Baghel himself had led backward class movement on various demands including one pertaining to 27 per cent reservation.

Jogi said that backward class commission was formed during the regime of Bharatiya Janata Party. The commission had made recommendations on various points including 27 per cent reservation, he said. Though it is a binding to table the recommendations in the House, the then BJP government did not present it in Legislative Assembly for discussion, he added.
