Jammu bus stand grenade blast: 26 injured, several critical

Jammu, Mar 7 (IBNS): As many as 26 people have been injured, with some of them critical, in a grenade explosion at the main bus stand around noon here today, media reports said.

“There is no death in the incident but around 26 people have been injured. Eleven of the injured belonged to Kashmir, eight to Jammu and six others from different states,” Jammu deputy commissioner Ramesh Kumar told Hindustan Times.

Some of the injured were being operated upon Kumar said.

Most of the injured are bus drivers and conductors, said reports.

“There was a big explosion in a bus and the impact was so powerful that the windscreens of three to four other buses were also smashed. Many people were injured but there were three to four persons, who were critically injured. You can see their blood on the spot. There was total chaos and panic after the explosion as people ran to safety. We didn’t rush to the injured fearing a second explosion because a strange noise was coming from the bus on which the grenade was planted. We waited for some time and then went to their rescue. There was no police at the time of the incident,” HT quoted Rakesh Kumar, an eyewitness, as saying.

“Obviously the intention is always to disturb communal peace and harmony... The police is working on all the leads. We are collecting evidence and we will hunt them down,” Jammu inspector-general of police M.K. Sinha was quoted as saying by the media.

Police have cordoned off the blast site that is located in the heart of the city. Sniffer dogs have been deployed to check if there are more explosives.

The injured have been taken to Government Medical College and Hospital for treatment.

This is the third grenade explosion in the area in 10 months.
